This popular tourist destination turned out to be the most polluted in the world
Cairo, one of the most famous tourist cities in the world, has been ranked first in the list of the most polluted destinations. The Egyptian capital, which attracts almost 15 million tourists annually, has some of the worst environmental performance.
This study was conducted by DIPNDIVE. The city, which is famous for its rich history and attractions, remains a magnet for travelers from all over the world despite its environmental challenges. Express.co.uk has revealed why this city has received such a dubious rating and what it offers to tourists.
According to the study, the main criteria for assessing the level of pollution were the Air Quality Index, PM2.5 concentrations (which are the tiny air particles harmful to health), water quality index, and noise levels. In Cairo, the AQI is 160, which is considered unhealthy for living. For comparison, the normal air quality index is 36. The concentration of PM2.5 in the city reaches 68.4 µg/m³, significantly exceeding the WHO recommended limit of 5 µg/m³.
In addition to air, pollution affects water and the city's overall ecology. The Nile, considered the heart of Cairo, suffers from pollution despite its importance to the city. The noise level in the capital also remains one of the highest among tourist destinations, creating additional discomfort for locals and visitors.
Despite all these challenges, tourists continue to choose Cairo as a vacation destination. The main attraction of the city is the Great Pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, which impresses with its scale and history. Nearby is the Egyptian Museum, which contains more than 17 thousand artifacts, including mummies and sarcophagi.
Cruises on the Nile River deserve special attention. During such a walk, tourists can enjoy the view of the city from the water, discovering its beauty from a different perspective. Cycling and visiting local markets add to the atmosphere of the trip.
For those planning a trip to Cairo, it is important to take into account the environmental nuances of the city. Tourists are advised to choose morning hours for excursions to avoid crowds and high air pollution. It's also worth paying attention to local sustainable tourism activities aimed at minimizing the negative impact on nature.
Although pollution is a serious problem, Cairo's historical value and cultural heritage continue to attract travelers. This city offers a unique experience that combines modern life and ancient traditions. Tourists who choose Cairo can enjoy its beauty while following simple environmental rules.
Cairo remains an example of a city that, despite the challenges, retains its charm and power to attract millions of visitors.
