"The worst motivation": Kaprachov explains to parents why school grades are not the main thing

Dmytro Kaprachov explained why school grades are not the most important thing

The grades children receive at school do not always correspond to their actual level of knowledge. Trying to get a good grade leads to the fact that a student will seek praise from others rather than listening to their desires, which can negatively affect their life in the future.

This was stated by Dmytro Karpachov, an expert in child psychology and personality development, in the Supermom project. The grade only shows how well the student has learned the material studied at school, but it is not always related to academic performance.

According to the expert, parents do the right thing when they help their children, for example, with homework. However, it is not right to demand good grades and control the learning process – it is better to teach the child to work independently.

"It's not about grades, it's about the child being able to learn, having knowledge, being interested in learning. Sometimes people focus solely on grades, but the knowledge can be mediocre. As soon as a student gets a grade, he or she forgets all the material. Grades are secondary," Karpachov said.

The expert advises parents not to teach their children to depend on other people's praise and not to compare them with others.

"A child should not study just to be praised. This is the worst motivation for learning," he summarized.

Earlier, Ruslan Tsygankov, a teacher from Kyiv, also assured that parents should not scold their children for their grades in school, as children may lose the desire to learn and hate the subjects. Instead, he advises parents to look into the problem and possibly switch to another discipline.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Esther Wojcicki, a teacher and mother of three successful daughters, said that grades at school do not matter. According to her, the most important thing parents can do for their children is to make them believe in themselves.
