British researchers from Broadbandchoices conducted a study that determined the scariest horror movie in history. Thus, it happened to be Sinister, directed by Scott Derrickson in 2012.

This was reported by Forbes with reference to a study. According to insiders, experts selected the highest rated horror films on different platforms and showed them to the participants of the experiment, measuring their heart rate while watching. While watching the movie Sinister, the subjects' heart rate rose to 86 beats per minute. This is a third higher than the average.

The second place went to the 2010 film Insidious by James Wan, which had the audience's heart rate rising to 133 beats per minute in some scenes. The third scariest horror film is 2013 The Conjuring directed by James Wan too. While watching it, the hearts of the participants in the experiment beat at 85 beats per minute.

The rating also includes The Conjuring 2, Hereditary, Paranormal Activity, The Babadook, It, The Descent, and The Visit.
