What is the movie "The Room Next Door" about?

"The Room Next Door" is a 2024 drama film adapted from the novel What You're Going Through by Sigrid Nunez, The Guardian reports. This is a story about two women: war correspondent Martha, who is dying of cervical cancer, and science fiction author Ingrid. In the past, they worked for the same fashion magazine and were good friends, but due to different life circumstances, they lost touch.

At the moment when the cancer-stricken heroine decides to take the euthanasia pill, she wants her old friend by her side. Martha does not know exactly when she will be able to commit suicide, so she shares a short instruction with Ingrid: every night she will leave her bedroom door open, and the morning when the room remains closed will mean her death.

The last days of a sick woman's life are filled with communication, walks, and time spent together with an old friend. After a long separation, the friends have finally begun to reconnect and rekindle their warm feelings for each other, so the fateful morning with Martha's room locked makes them feel devastated.

For its part, Vulture adds that, in addition to a good script, the creative team worked hard on the color scheme of the shots. At the end of her life, the cancer patient character changes her gloomy style to bright and outrageous clothes, while Ingrid, on the contrary, begins to prefer a subdued wardrobe.
