Planting a new lawn is a process that requires careful planning. You should consider not only the type of soil and grass variety, but also the climate and time of planting.

Plants should have time to get stronger and form a stable root system before the first frost. The publication A Farmer to Himself named the best time to sow a lawn.

Fall is the best time to plant a lawn for several reasons. Firstly, the soil is still warm enough after the summer months to allow for rapid seed germination.

Secondly, fall rains provide natural moisture, which is important for successful grass rooting. And finally, fewer weeds appear during this period, allowing the grass to grow without too much competition for nutrients.

Another important advantage of fall sowing is convenience. This is a great solution for those who did not have time to prepare the site in the spring.

When to sow the lawn in the fall?

When choosing the right time for autumn lawn sowing, keep in mind that there should be at least 40 days before the first frost. Only then will the seeds have time to germinate, and the grass will be able to reach a sufficient height and strengthen the root system.

On the territory of Ukraine, as a rule, the most suitable period for sowing lawn grass is the time before September 20, up to a maximum of October 10. You also need to follow the general recommendations from the manufacturers of the seeds you purchased.

Winter sowing of the lawn

If the weather in the fall is unpredictable and frosts occur shortly after sowing, some gardeners recommend sowing the lawn in winter, followed by covering the area with peat crumbs. This method involves sowing seeds after the soil has frozen but before a stable snow cover appears.

The advantages of winter sowing are that the seeds that have been frozen receive an additional impetus for active spring growth and become less susceptible to disease. Therefore, after the snow melts, you can get a thick and healthy lawn.

However, you should not carry out winter sowing in areas with a large slope, as meltwater can wash away the topsoil. There is also a risk that the heat will last long enough for the seeds to germinate and die after the first frost.
