According to Polish legend, in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, Antoni Jachewski, a con man who claimed to heal people, lived in Kielce, a town near the Jelenia Ridge. Thanks to donations, he became so rich that he turned his hermitage into a fortified fortress.

A research team from Świętokrzyskie found a cache of gold and silver coins hidden in a mountain range in Poland. After conducting relevant research, the group confirmed that these coins indeed belonged to the legendary swindler, Zwiadowca Historii reports.

At the end of the seventeenth century, the Republic of Poland was swept by another wave of plague, which easily spread across the country with the outbreak of the Great Northern War. Desperate people indulged in religious rituals, wishing to pray for salvation. Fraudsters took advantage of the state of anxiety, promising to cure the sick or protect the healthy from disease. One of these fraudsters was Antony Jachevsky, who even claimed that he received his healing power from the Virgin Mary, who lived with him in a hermitage.

His fraud worked: people went to him and gave him substantial donations, hoping for healing. In a short time, the hermitage turned into a stronghold with hired guards, with which he robbed pilgrims and, as some claimed, also the surrounding estates. Eventually, the local gentry captured Jacewicz and handed him over to the Krakow episcopal court. However, he escaped from prison, returned to his former hermitage, and resumed his "work" of healing. He was arrested again, but this time he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

"We have waited a long time to announce this find, but it was worth it. Today we can say that we have confirmed the true story of a certain legend. Until now, Anthony was considered a fictional person/myth/legend. And by finding his treasure, we have confirmed that such a person really existed," commented Sebastian Grabowiec, president of the Świętokrzyska Exploration Group, which discovered the treasure.

In addition to the coins, the group also discovered a golden Hamburg ducat from 1648, which contained an image of the Madonna and Child. Since the piece was pierced, experts believe it may have been worn as a medallion.

Authorities have not yet announced how many coins have been found as the investigation is ongoing. "I can only say that there are a lot of them. We have coins from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, mostly made of silver," Sebastian said.
