The Blood Moon will rise over the Earth. When and how to watch: one person in 10 will be lucky

Inna VasilyukNews

Next month, on March 13-14, North, South America and Europe will see a rare astronomical event - a "Blood Moon" will rise over the Earth. According to Time and Date, only one in ten people around the world will see the eclipse from start to finish.

The eclipse will start as a penumbra, then it will become partial and then total. The total eclipse - when the Moon turns blood red and is in the deepest shadow - will last a little over an hour, Metro writes.

North and South America will see the total eclipse, Europe will see the beginning of the penumbra and partial phase, while Asia will be able to watch the end of the astronomical show.

In Europe, only the western United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, central Spain and northwestern France will see the totality of the eclipse. Here, the Moon will first slip into the Earth's penumbra at 3:57 a.m. EDT on March 14.

And the best opportunity to see the blood-red Moon will be at 6:19 am, a few minutes after sunrise. This is because the peak of the eclipse occurs at 6:58 am, when the Moon sadly sets below the horizon.

Western and Central Europe will be able to see a partial eclipse just before the Moon sets and the Sun rises for about 75 minutes.

How an eclipse occurs

Lunar eclipses are a graceful, delicate dance between the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon, astronomers say poetically.

The Earth has two shadows, experts say. The darkest central one is called the shadow, and the outer one is called the penumbra.

Since the Earth is bigger than the Moon, the shadow of the blue marble can cover the entire lunar surface.

The penumbral lunar eclipse is the first phase of a lunar eclipse, when our nighttime neighbor passes the penumbra of the Earth. This is followed by a partial eclipse, when the Earth's shadow slowly engulfs the moon, scientists explain.

During a total eclipse, our satellite is completely absorbed by the shadow. As the Moon moves away, a second partial and penumbral lunar eclipse will occur, astronomers say.

According to the scientists, the "Blood Moon" occurs because a tiny band of sunlight slips through the Earth's atmosphere, projecting the colors of the sunset like a movie projector onto a white sheet.

Therefore, instead of the usual pale, the Moon is splattered with colors such as pale red or dark orange, experts describe.
