American surfer Alessandro "Alo" Slebir set a world record by conquering a wave of about 33 meters (108 feet), which is the height of an 11-story building. It happened at the Mavericks surf spot on December 23, 2024. The previous achievement was 25 meters and belonged to Sebastian Steudtner (Portugal, 2020).
Mavericks is a famous surf spot located off the coast of Half Moon Bay in California. It is known for its huge waves, which can reach a height of 20-30 meters (60-100 feet) during the season. This spot attracts experienced surfers from all over the world because the waves there require high skill and training.
Slebir, who has been surfing since he was 14, admitted that this experience was the most extreme of his career.
To get on the wave, he was towed by a jet ski driven by his friend Luca Padua. According to Alessandro, the energy of the water was incredible, and the speed of the descent was dizzying.
To determine the height of waves, experts use video recordings and advanced technology for accurate measurements. Surfing expert Jeff Clarke said it was one of the biggest waves he had seen since 1975, adding that it was definitely over 30 meters.
