The sunspot AR 3842, which last week triggered the most powerful flare in seven years - X9.05 - has been exploding with renewed vigor for two days in a row this week. Yesterday, scientists recorded a flare with a magnitude of X2.1, and today - X1.8.

Although Monday's solar flare was not as powerful as the previous one, it caused a significant amount of ultraviolet radiation, which led to the shutdown of shortwave radio in North and South America, as well as over the Pacific Ocean, Space.com writes. And today's explosion was directed toward the Earth.

Scientists from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center have confirmed that the eruption on the Sun showed signs of a coronal mass ejection (CME), a plume of plasma and a magnetic field.

Experts emphasize that it was clearly visible and type II radio emission was recorded at a speed of 5176 km/s. The fast-moving coronal mass ejection (CME) is directed toward the Earth.

According to experts, such explosions of energetic particles take several days to reach the Earth and interact with our magnetic field. Given the speed at which this time the solar flare occurred, the CME will likely pass by our planet within 48 hours, researchers say. Therefore, we can expect a geomagnetic storm at the end of Thursday and on Friday.
