For all peoples, the winter solstice has long been considered one of the most important dates. After it, the day begins to arrive and it is believed that the Sun turns to spring. Even the advent of monotheistic religions could not change the meaning of the shortest day of the year. That is why now Christmas falls on this period.

OBOZ.UA asked when exactly the astronomical winter solstice will take place in 2023. He also tells us what traditions and superstitions are associated with this ancient holiday.

Winter solstice 2023

In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice falls on December 21 or 22. On this day, the center of the Sun passes through the southernmost point of the ecliptic and the shortest day and longest night of the year come. They last about 8 and 16 hours, respectively.

Astronomers have calculated that this year's event will take place on December 22. According to Kyiv time, the sun will be at its highest point at 5:27 am. From that moment, the astronomical winter begins, ending at the vernal equinox.

In contrast, there are also characteristic prohibitions of the holiday. For example, you can't celebrate the rebirth of the sun in a sad mood, be angry, or wish people harm.
