Researchers at the University of California have found that the main reasons people are unfaithful are individual predispositions, such as their own commitment to the relationship and their threshold for temptation. And the partner has minimal influence here.

The study found that people who said they were very committed to the relationship were 78% less likely to cheat than participants who had a lower level of commitment. This was reported by DailyMail.

American researchers surveyed 1912 people who were married or living with their partner. Participants answered questions about whether their partner was passionate, whether they believed their partner was unfaithful, and their own commitment to the relationship.

The survey results showed that people who said they were very committed to the relationship were less likely to cheat than those who like to "jump the gun."

"The decision to be unfaithful is a purely individualistic choice. And the partner does not play a key role here. Because having more sex and developing a deeper connection with a partner did not serve as a deterrent to infidelity," the study says.

And even if a partner shows great care, it won't keep a person from cheating if they have a desire to cheat.

"Loving a person and giving them everything they want won't keep them from cheating. The decision to stay faithful is a purely personal decision. And at any time, a person can say that they no longer want to maintain a relationship to avoid infidelity to their partner," the authors of the study said.

These findings differ from a 2020 study that argued that a lack of love and intimacy in a relationship is associated with longer affairs and more public dates with an affair partner.

According to previous studies, 16% of married couples admitted to being unfaithful at some point in their marriage, and 57% of relationships ended in divorce due to infidelity.

"Communication and trust are the basic elements of a healthy relationship. When these components are missing, the relationship is doomed to fail," emphasized marriage and family therapist Jeff Yu.
