Scientists have disproved the myth of habit formation in 21 days
There is a theory that a habit takes 21 days to form. However, a study by the University of South Australia indicates that it takes much longer.
Scientists have found that habits begin to form in about two months (on average, about 59-66 days). And it can take up to 335 days for them to be fully formed, Tech Explorist writes.
A healthy lifestyle depends on the formation of good habits and the abandonment of bad ones. Although the idea that habits are formed within 21 days is quite common, it has no scientific basis. According to the UniSA researchers who conducted the first systematic review, such habit formation can take much longer and depends on each individual.
This finding is important because it can help shape health interventions to promote healthy behaviors and prevent chronic disease.
"For people hoping to develop healthier habits, it's important not to give up after three weeks," says University of South Australia researcher Dr. Ben Singh.
In addition, the researchers named several factors that can influence the successful formation of a habit.
Frequency, time, and enjoyment of the new activity play an important role. Adding a new practice to your morning routine increases the likelihood of success, and enjoying the new habit also makes it easier to stick with it.
Planning and intentionality in introducing a new habit into your daily life can help reinforce it. Take time to incorporate your new healthy habits into your daily activities. For example, prepare your workout clothes in the evening or a healthy lunch for work so you don't feel like skipping a run or grabbing a quick lunch at a café.
"Developing strategies for habit formation and planning how to achieve them will ensure your success," scientists are sure.
