Scientists from Finland suggest that after the holidays everyone should drown Christmas trees in nearby water bodies. Interestingly, this practice has aroused interest abroad.

The method of dumping Christmas trees into water bodies is not new, but only recently have scientists proven its usefulness. Used conifers improve the microflora of water bodies, Yle writes.

Research by the Institute of the Environment has shown that flooding Christmas trees in the lake has a positive effect on the aquatic environment. For example, the number of microorganisms is growing, the fish population is strengthening, and the overall biodiversity is increasing, experts say.

"Our study has been widely publicized," said Karri-Matti Vuori, a hydrobiologist and study leader.

According to the scientist, Christmas trees are now being flooded in Pirkanmaa, Lapland, and the Helsinki metropolitan area.

The researcher reports that the Finnish experience has already attracted interest in Sweden and Canada, where they have also started using trees to improve the microclimate of water bodies after the holidays.
