Putin's movements tracked by his bodyguards' fitness app – Le Monde

The movements of world leaders can now be tracked online through a fitness app used by their bodyguards. This applies, in particular, to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who is protected by the Federal Security Service (FSS).

The app that allows you to track his movements is called Strava and is designed to track sports activity via GPS. This is stated in an investigation by the French newspaper Le Monde.

The journalists identified six FSS officers who are responsible for Putin's security and have public accounts on Strava. Their movements, including during professional trips, could be tracked online.

Overall, the Strava app has more than 125 million users in 190 countries. It is mostly used by runners and cyclists to record their activities and share information with the community.

It is noted that this is not the first time that the technology used by security guards allows them to track those they protect. According to former Wall Street Journal reporter Byron Tau, in his book "Means of Control: How the Hidden Alliance of Tech and Government Is Creating a New American Surveillance State," American intelligence agencies learned how to track Putin's movements.

They used a program developed by a Pentagon contractor for $600,000 that allows them to track the location of smartphone owners through targeted advertising. Since Putin himself does not use a smartphone, the Americans monitored the phones of people around the dictator.
