Protect the garden and vegetable garden: what to do in the country in December

Although December is considered a month of rest in the garden, there is still work to be done on the site. These works, although they do not require much effort, are very important for keeping the garden in a healthy state and ensuring a good harvest next season.

Caring for plant shelters

If you have covered your perennials for the winter, don't forget to ventilate them regularly. Sudden temperature changes can lead to condensation and plant decay. On warm, windless days, remove the cover to ventilate the plants.

Covering winter crops

Plants sown in the fall need additional protection from frost. Cover them with dry leaves, straw, or special covering material. This will help them to successfully overwinter and please you with an early harvest.

Attracting birds

Birds are natural enemies of many pests. To attract them to your garden, make bird feeders and add food regularly. This will not only help protect your garden but also create additional aesthetics.

Protecting trees from rodents

One of the most important tasks in December is to protect young trees from hares and other rodents. Their sharp teeth can cause significant damage to the bark of trees, especially young trees. Use metal mesh or special plastic covers to protect the trunks. Lower branches also need additional protection.

Preventing tree injuries

After snowfall and ice, regularly inspect trees for damage. Shake off snow from branches and carefully remove ice. If branches are broken, cut them back to healthy tissue.
