Onions will stay fresh for weeks: the secret place in the kitchen to store them
Onions are a key ingredient in most main dishes. That is why most housewives prefer to have this vegetable at home at all times. To do this, it is important to follow the storage rules.
There are many methods of storing onions to ensure that you always have fresh onions at home and that they don't spoil for a long time. But the most effective one was recently shared with Express by Chuck Sillary, chef and founder of Mortadella Head.
According to Sillari, he always stores onions whole and raw in the pantry by putting them in a basket. He prefers an open container because it ensures good air circulation and, as a result, the onions stay dry. Lack of air movement can lead to moisture accumulation, which is not good for the vegetable.
The main secret to long-term storage of onions is to avoid water sources nearby. This way, the vegetable will not be able to accumulate excess moisture, which accelerates the rotting process. Heat and light can also trigger onion sprouting, which can turn the onion green and give it a bitter taste. Therefore, the place where you store the vegetable should not contain light sources.
If you don't have a pantry or basement, you can store onions in a kitchen cabinet that is away from the water tap, stove top, and oven. Under these storage conditions, the vegetable will remain fresh for weeks.
