Not only in Rio: a small island country organizes a large-scale carnival every year

Elena BylimNews

Rio de Janeiro is not the only place where the atmosphere of an incredible carnival is in full swing. Trinidad and Tobago, a small island nation, annually organizes a large-scale celebration that is as big as the Brazilian one.

This year's carnival took place from March 3 to 4, and was filled with music, dancing, and colorful parades. This holiday, known as the "mother of all carnivals," is a unique cultural phenomenon that combines African and Caribbean traditions.

Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago is distinguished by its musical part. Unlike the Brazilian carnival, which is dominated by samba, it features steel drums, calypso and soca music, a style that originated on these islands. The history of the carnival dates back to the time of slavery, when African slaves, deprived of the opportunity to participate in the celebrations of white planters, created their own traditions with dancing, drumming, and masquerades.

A special event of the carnival is the Jouvert, which takes place on the morning of Carnival Monday. This is a symbolic reenactment of the burning of sugar cane fields, which was the beginning of the slave revolt. Festival participants reenact this historic event, creating a unique atmosphere.

Trinidad and Tobago is not just about carnival. The island nation is famous for its white sand beaches with crystal clear water and abundant wildlife. Maracas and Pigeon Point beaches are considered to be among the best in the country. Nature lovers can visit the Acee Wright Nature Center and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, home to hundreds of species of birds.

For those looking for a unique experience, the island offers the Nylon Pool and Tobago's Buccoo Reef, shallow sandbanks in the middle of the ocean that are ideal for snorkeling. Pitch Lake in Trinidad, the world's largest natural asphalt deposit, is also worth a visit. And Argyle Falls in Tobago impresses with its beauty and lush tropical nature.

Trinidad and Tobago is becoming an increasingly popular destination for tourists, thanks to its natural beauty and unique culture.

The climate of Trinidad and Tobago is tropical, with relatively stable temperatures throughout the year. The dry season, which lasts from January to May, is considered the best time to visit, because during this period there is less rainfall and more sunny days.
