In 2019, many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe mourned the death of Iron Man in the movie "Avengers: Endgame." In particular, because it put an end to the participation of actor Robert Downey Jr. in the franchise.

And now the sudden news: the star is returning to Marvel. But, as Variety writes, in a completely new role – Downey Jr. will play the villain Dr. Doom, also known as Victor Von Doom. His return will take place in the new Avengers dilogy, which will be directed by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo. They will also become a high-profile comeback in the cinematic universe.

In recent interviews, the actor has already hinted that he is ready for new offers from Marvel. In particular, he confirmed his return in an interview with Esquire magazine after receiving an Oscar for his role in the movie Oppenheimer. "I would love to. It's absolutely part and parcel of my DNA. This role chose me. And listen, I always say: 'Never, ever go up against Kevin Feige [chairman of Marvel Studios since 2007]. It's a losing bet. It's like what Tony Stark said to Pepper Potts when he got out of the cave and came home: "Okay, vacation's over," the actor said about his prospects for a new appearance in the superhero franchise.

But fans assumed that this meant the star's return to the role of Tony Stark, Iron Man. During San Diego Comic-Con, they were stunned by a completely unexpected announcement.

Downey's very first appearance as the playboy and genius Stark was in the 2008 movie Iron Man. It opened the Marvel universe, which was created by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Over the next 11 years, Downey reprised this role in 10 Marvel films. In particular, he appeared in such films as Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers, The First Avenger: Confrontation", "Avengers: Age of Ultron", "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame".

The final movie showed the death of Iron Man. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige emphasized in an interview with Vanity Fair last December that he was not interested in interfering with Downey's emotional departure. "We're going to save this moment and not touch it anymore," Feige said about Iron Man's death.
