Nissan has created a car paint that will help save fuel: how it will work
Japanese automotive giant Nissan is testing a new type of paint that will reduce interior temperatures. This should make driving more efficient and enjoyable during the hot months, and help save fuel.
The process of testing the new paint began in November 2023. Representatives of Nissan emphasized that the results are simply impressive.
It has become known that the new paint uses so-called metamaterials, i.e. synthetic composite materials with a structure that demonstrates properties that are not usually found in nature.
A car parked in the sun with the special paint actually showed less heating not only of the exterior surface but also of the temperature in the cabin. In fact, this means that the air conditioning in the cabin will have to be used less often, which in turn saves fuel or battery power.
The metamaterial inside the paint contains two light-reactive particles that give the paint the property of dissipating heat. First, some infrared rays of sunlight are reflected, which generate heat, and then electromagnetic waves are generated, which counteract the sun's rays. This redirects energy away from the car.
Experts say that the special molecular structure of the paint reduces the transfer of heat to the metal body of the car and into the cabin. Cars with the new type of paint are currently at the design stage.
Susumu Miura, senior manager of Nissan's Research Center, has high hopes for paint.
"My dream is to create 'cooler' cars without consuming energy. This is especially important in the era of electric vehicles when air conditioning operation in summer can have a significant impact on the state of charge," the expert emphasized.
The innovative type of paint can be used in construction, but there are nuances: it does not have a transparent layer and can leave chalky residues after touching. According to Miura, the paint has demonstrated resistance to salt, chips, peeling, scratches, etc.
