Brick paving is a great addition to a yard, and paths made of it look elegant and sophisticated. That is, until the pavers become covered with dirt and weeds and need cleaning.

If you think that only professionals can cope with cleaning in this case, we want to reassure you - the process of putting paved areas in order is not difficult at all. OBOZ.UA has collected all the main tips on this subject.

Why you should choose brick paving stones

Compared to other types of paving materials, brick has many advantages. It is durable, stable, and easy to maintain and repair. If you regularly sweep such a path, it will remain in good condition for a long time. Brick needs general cleaning once a year if your yard is shady, and once every few years for sunny areas.

However, when the time for cleaning does come, it is important to do it right. Bricks aren't cheap, so you certainly don't want to damage them. Here's how you can easily restore their good looks.

Choose the right product

There are several different products that can be used to clean bricks safely. If the dirt is light, hot water will suffice. If you need a thorough cleaning, you can use dishwashing liquid, white vinegar, or a special brick cleaner. Those who choose the latter option should check the instructions to see if it is safe to use for your type of paving. Alternatively, just apply a little bit of the product in an inconspicuous place to make sure it doesn't cause any undesirable effects, such as staining or bleaching.

To clean brick pavers by hand, you will need a bucket and a stiff brush, but not one with metal bristles. Alternatively, you can use a high-pressure washer if you have one. Just make sure to use a program with a minimum power setting so as not to displace the sand on which the bricks are planted.

How to properly clean brick pavers

Before cleaning, collect all debris from the path and remove any plants. You can protect the greenery along the side of the pavement, walls, and furniture nearby with a tarp. This is especially true if you use chemicals.

Start by completely soaking the pavers with plain water. The brick will absorb the liquid and this will protect it from getting too much detergent into the pores. It can leave stains. Only when the paths are well wet, apply the cleaning solution. Clean the tiles with a brush, treating one small area at a time, not allowing them to dry out in the process. Repeat the application of the solution if necessary. Finally, rinse the area with water until the foam stops and allow the bricks to dry completely.

No matter how carefully you clean, you will still wash a certain amount of sand from under the paving. So don't forget to fill in the gaps after you're done. Pour fresh sand and sweep it in with a dry, hard brush, pressing it into the cracks. Then spray the path with fresh water so that it can harden.

If your pavers have stains, try to scrape them off with a brush without scratching the bricks. Then treat the stained area with a detergent. To remove moss or lichen, use a chlorine bleach or fungicide. And only if all these measures do not help, contact a professional.
