Kim Jong-un ordered to build a beach resort in the DPRK with a water park, hotels and an airfield: foreigners will be invited to visit
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is seeking to speed up the construction of the Wonsan-Kalma beach resort, which began before the coronavirus pandemic. The dictator aims to complete all the work by 2025 to attract tourists and earn foreign currency.
The beach resort will include a water park, hotels, and an airfield. This was reported by The Sun.
According to expert Michael Madden, after the completion of construction, the DPRK will resume issuing tourist visas. In particular, North Korean travel agencies are targeting the British. Kim's hopes to launch the resort next year come amid a broader plan to revive North Korea's tourism industry and, in turn, earn foreign currency.
The dictator ordered the construction of the beach resort back in 2017. Photos from that time show a smiling Kim Jong-un surveying the rows of high-rise hotels and looking out at the sea from private villas.
With more than 150 buildings scattered along the peninsula, the complex is said to be 90 percent complete. However, it currently consists of garbage and unfinished hotels. That's because the resort was supposed to open in 2019, but that didn't happen because of the pandemic.
However, Kim wants to resume construction and import the materials needed to complete it. North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations is now working to attract foreign investment, likely from China and Russia.
Michael Madden says that the DPRK leader seeks to develop tourism and business, defining long-term political goals. The expert added that Pyongyang is well aware that sanctions and weapons of mass destruction tests scare away tourists and foreign investment. According to him, Kim wants to complete the construction next year, but it is likely to happen in 2025.
