Ideal for a garden: how to properly care for hollyhocks
Mallow is one of the best garden plants. These flowering giants can reach 1.5 meters in height, and the stems produce hundreds of saucer-shaped flowers that bloom from spring to the first frost.
Mallows are easy to grow from seeds. These flowers are an ideal choice even for beginner gardeners. Florists say that mallows don't need much fertilizer, but periodic fertilization will help prolong flowering.
Mallows grow best in sunny areas. These strong flowers usually thrive without much care. Gardeners advise against using fertilizers when they are not necessary, as over-fertilization can cause significant damage to plants. However, there are some cases where it can prolong flowering.
"For mallows in the first year of planting, it's worth adding some nutrients to the soil," said Drew Swainston, professional horticulturist and editor of Homes & Gardens.
This is best done in the spring with a good mulch cover or by spraying a slow-release fertilizer.
For mallows that bloom in the second year, whether grown in pots or borders, Swainston recommends feeding during the growing season as this can help prolong flowering. Regularly applying a small amount of fertilizer from spring to fall will encourage the emergence of additional flower stems.
Using slow-release fertilizers will help to nourish the plants over a longer period of time. Florists advise mixing a small handful of granules with fresh soil during spring planting.
For perennials, it is better to use a fertilizer with a high phosphorus content.
Although mulching can be done at any time of the year, it is best done in the fall or winter, when pruning or removing faded plants.
