How to wash berries to prevent mold: a life hack that not everyone knows
If you like to add fresh berries to your diet, you probably know how difficult it is to store them. They tend to quickly become moldy and rot.
However, you can fight this. The chef at Detroit 75 Kitchen shared his life hack on TikTok. He explained how he washes berries to not only protect them from mold but also to wash away all the chemicals that were used in the growing process, such as pesticides.
According to the chef, this treatment is especially important for those who have children growing up in the family. It makes berries safer for kids.
To wash the berries, prepare a bowl of cold water, white vinegar, and paper or cloth towels. Dissolve one cap or a tablespoon of vinegar in the bowl. Mix everything well and soak the berries in this solution for 15 minutes. The vinegar will gently disinfect the delicate skin and kill the mold spores during this time. Then put the berries in a colander, let the liquid drain, and spread them out on towels to dry. After that, you can put them in containers and store them.
If you are dealing with delicate berries such as raspberries or strawberries, the chef advised to reduce the soaking time to 7-10 minutes. In this case, they will not get wet and soft but will retain their texture.
In the comments, he complained that some people do not like vinegar because of the smell or are allergic to it. In this case, the chef suggested treating the berries with a solution of a tablespoon of baking soda in a bowl of cold water.
