How to store open yogurt properly: will stay fresh for weeks
Dairy products such as yogurt have a notoriously short shelf life once opened, especially when purchased in large containers.
Buying in large quantities is often more cost-effective, but it comes with the need to use up the yogurt before it spoils, becoming watery and smelling awful. However, the solution is easier than you think, OBOZ.UA writes.
It is best to make yogurt at home and then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Under such conditions, it will be tasty and fresh for up to two weeks. The ideal container for this is a sterilized glass jar with a tightly closed lid.
Those who buy yogurt in large containers with a paper lid can transfer the product to an airtight container for durability. This should slow down the process that causes the whey to separate and the watery residue that forms on the yogurt.
While you can't completely avoid the formation of liquid, you can return the yogurt to its original state by stirring the whey again or draining it off the top.
This liquid can be added to smoothies, dressings, and soups for additional vitamins and nutrients.
When it comes to thickening watery yogurt, whether homemade or purchased, straining can help. Simply pour the yogurt in a strainer lined with several layers of cheesecloth or paper towels and place it over a bowl. Let it sit in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours and then pour out the liquid. You will get much thicker yogurt.
Return the yogurt to the fridge. Do not store it on door shelves as this is where the temperature fluctuates the most. It is also not recommended to put yogurt in the freezer, as its texture may change after defrosting.
