How to prune roses and when to do it: we explain
Spring, every gardener's favorite season, is on its way. If you want your roses to grow big and beautiful, now is the perfect time to help them.
The very first task on this list should be pruning. Spring is usually the best time for pruning, just before the start of new growth, writes OBOZ.UA.
How to prune roses correctly
Start by trimming the roses and removing the faded heads and leaves around them. Make sure you use clean and sharp secateurs to make clean cuts.
You can place the debris directly into a bucket, trash can, or on a sturdy sheet of earth for easy cleanup.
When pruning, keep an eye out for common rose diseases such as black spots or pests such as rose aphids.
If you see any signs, remove infected leaves or stems to prevent the problem from spreading to other plants.
The second step is to focus on removing dead or damaged stems and cutting them back to healthy wood. Make sure that the cuts are angled downward so that water does not accumulate on the buds.
For thicker branches, a pruning saw with a high-quality serrated blade will quickly remove large stems.
The next task should be mulching. Ideally, the best time to apply mulch to roses is early spring.
However, if your roses have not been mulched before or if all the mulch has disappeared by fall, it may be worth mulching them in late fall.
Make sure that there is no debris on the ground, such as leaves, and apply the mulch around the base of the rose in a thick layer of about 5 to 10 cm. Well-rotted manure, soil improver, leaf mold, or compost are all ideal.
