Hardly anyone missed the blackout schedules, but they are back. Blackouts have to be introduced due to significant damage to energy infrastructure after massive Russian attacks.

So it's time to remember how to connect to Wi-Fi even in the absence of electricity. OBOZ.UA explains what GPON technology is and how to do without expensive generators and still have access to the Internet.

What is GPON technology?

GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) is a technology that allows you to use the home Internet even in the absence of electricity. All you need to do is connect a router and an optical terminal to a power bank, and the network will work without electricity.

Currently, providers support powering systems with generators, so you can access Wi-Fi even during power outages. The main thing is to connect to the network correctly.

How to access Wi-Fi without power

First of all, you should make sure that your apartment has optical fiver and terminal. Usually, your provider installs them when they connect to the Internet.

To connect to the network, you need to connect the optical terminal and the router to an additional power supply, such as a power bank or a small generator.

To start using Wi-Fi without power, you need to connect the power bank to the optical terminal and router.

You will need:

  • two USB wires DC 5.5 mm x 2.1 mm;
  • two power banks: one for the router and one for the optical terminal.

If you have wires with higher voltage, everything will work with one power bank.

The duration of Wi-Fi use depends on the power of the portable battery.

Experts say that by connecting a USB DC 5.5 mm x 2.1 mm 5V 90 cm cable with a 5200 mAh uninterruptible power supply, the Internet will work for two to four hours. To extend the operating time, you can use a similar set with a more powerful 20,000 mAh power bank or take an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with 400 VA.

You can also simultaneously charge your laptop and use the network for 2 to 4 hours, which requires an 800 VA power supply. For six hours of work, you will need a UPS of 850 VA or more.

If you need the Internet to work on a desktop computer, you can use an uninterruptible power supply device of 1500 VA for two hours and an uninterruptible power supply with a higher capacity (from 3000 VA) for 4 hours.
