Spring comes with the scent of lilacs. This is a fairly unpretentious shrub, so it is easy to grow in your garden. The main thing is to master the process of propagation by cuttings.

To increase the chances of successful survival, it is better to take several cuttings. They should be cut in the morning when the weather is cool and the plant is well-moistened. OBOZ.UA tells you how to grow lilacs in your garden.

How to prepare cuttings

  1. Cuttings should be taken from new growth in late May or early June. You need to cut off young shoots 10-15 cm long.
  2. It is better to cut off the lower leaves of the cuttings, leaving 2-3 leaves on top. Roots will appear from the nodes – the places where the leaves are attached to the stem.
  3. Fill the container with soil mixture, sand, and perlite. The mixture should be slightly moistened, and then a hole should be made for planting with a stick or little finger.

How to plant cuttings

The lower part of the cutting should be planted in a hole and lightly sprinkled with soil mixture so that it stands upright. You can plant several cuttings in one container, provided that their leaves do not touch. The pot with the cutting should be placed in a warm place, away from direct sunlight – the shoots do not need bright light at this time.

Be careful with watering – the soil mixture should remain slightly moist, but never wet. You can cover the container with a transparent plastic bag to provide a humid environment. Be sure to open the bag periodically and make a few holes in the plastic to allow air circulation and prevent rot.

When to transplant lilacs

Usually, cuttings take root in 1-2 months – this can be traced by the appearance of young growths. At this stage, you need to provide the cuttings with access to bright indirect light and let the soil mixture dry slightly between waterings.

After complete rooting, you can transplant the lilac to a permanent place in the garden.
