Since indoor plants are in constant contact with moisture, they remain one of the potential sources of mold at home. Indeed, from time to time you may notice a white, gray, or brown coating on the surface of the soil. In this case, you need to take immediate action to get rid of the problem and save the plant.

OBOZ.UA tells you where mold comes from in the soil of indoor plants. And also how to deal with it in order to completely remove it and prevent its reappearance.

Why mold is dangerous

For plants, a layer of mold on the soil is dangerous because it restricts oxygen to the roots. The prolonged presence of mold in the ground weakens the flowers, slows their growth, and ultimately leads to death.

In addition, mold spores flying in the air can also be harmful to humans. Those who suffer from allergies or respiratory diseases are particularly sensitive to them. Due to the presence of these spores, people and pets can develop undesirable reactions, such as skin symptoms, difficult-to-control runny nose and cough, and shortness of breath.

Most often, molds are found in indoor plants during the cold season. At this time, the evaporation of water from the ground is slower, so more favorable conditions are created for the development of molds. However, other mistakes in caring for indoor plants often cause the problem.

What causes mold to grow in a pot

Molds thrive in humid environments with limited air circulation. As soon as you notice signs of a problem, immediately check all the conditions in which your plant is located. Here is a list of them.

Location. Contrary to household logic, pots placed near radiators and other heat sources are most vulnerable to mold. The lack of light that we face in the fall and winter season also contributes to the development of harmful fungi. Proximity to various types of humidifiers can also cause damage.

Watering. In winter, plants need less moisture. If you water and spray your indoor flowers in the same way as in summer, this can cause a problem. Especially if you keep your home warm – the combination of humidity and heat creates ideal conditions for mold growth.

Soil quality. Lack of drainage holes in the pot and too compacted soil can also cause mold to grow. Such conditions prevent proper water drainage. If you add poor air circulation due to the placement of plants in tightly closed rooms, this can only exacerbate the problem.

How to get rid of mold in a flower pot

You need to react to signs of mold in the pot as soon as possible – the problem can be solved effectively only at the initial stages. If it's allowed to get too far along, you'll need to resort to professional chemicals – home remedies won't help.

The first step is to remove and dispose of the infected soil layer. Replace it with a fresh and dry substrate. Then use one of the following remedies.

  • Cinnamon – The aromatic spice has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Sprinkle a thin layer on the surface of the soil to protect your plants from further mold growth.
  • Activated charcoal – a product from the home medicine cabinet cleanses the soil of bacteria and pathogens, improves the quality of the substrate, and helps eliminate the unpleasant odor that can accompany mold. Crush a few tablets and sprinkle this powder on the potting soil.
  • Garlic – this seasoning should be used in dried and ground form. But don't overdo it, the burning substances can harm the plant.
  • Cloves – fresh clove heads are also a good protection against fungi. Cut them into smaller pieces and stick them in the ground.
