How to feed tomato and pepper seedlings: effective ways
Fertilizing seedlings is an important step in obtaining a bountiful harvest. Seeds contain a supply of nutrients sufficient for germination and development in the early stages. However, over time, this supply is depleted, and seedlings need additional nutrition for growth and development.
Fertilization promotes the development of a strong and healthy root system that provides the plant with water and nutrients from the soil. Fertilizers contain nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and promote the active growth of stems, leaves, and fruits. OBOZ.UA tells you about the most effective fertilizers for growing seedlings.
Wood ash
Ash is a proven folk remedy for plant nutrition that contains many useful elements. Ash from a fireplace, stove, or barbecue is a natural source of potassium, calcium, and phosphorus. The use of ash helps strengthen the root system of plants and helps fight fungal diseases.
To fertilize seedlings, it is enough to sprinkle a thin layer of ash on the potted soil several times. If you want to achieve the maximum effect, use ash from deciduous trees – it contains more calcium, or ash from conifers, which is rich in phosphorus.
Bird droppings
Poultry manure, especially chicken or pigeon manure, is considered one of the best organic fertilizers due to its high nitrogen content. However, it is dangerous to use it fresh, as it can damage the root system.
You should dilute the manure with water in a ratio of 1:10 and leave the mixture to stand for three days. After that, it should be further diluted to reduce the concentration. Poultry manure is ideal for stimulating the growth of green mass of plants, but it should be used only once a season.
Onion peel
Onion peel contains B vitamins, carotene, and ascorbic acid, as well as trace elements such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron. Thanks to this, it has a complex effect on plants. 100 g of the husk should be covered with water and left for several days. The infusion has antiseptic properties and can be used to prevent fungal diseases of seedlings.
Eggshells
Eggshells are almost entirely composed of calcium carbonate, which is a necessary element for the formation of a strong root system and healthy plant growth. You need to dry the shells and grind them into a powder. You can add the powder to the soil when planting seedlings or use it for mulching.
Coffee grounds
Coffee grounds contain nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, which are important elements for plant growth and development. Nitrogen contributes to the growth of green mass, phosphorus is necessary for the formation of the root system, and potassium strengthens the immune system and increases resistance to diseases. Coffee grounds improve soil structure, making it more loose and breathable. This contributes to better oxygen access to the roots of plants and prevents water stagnation. Note that coffee can acidify the soil, so you can add ash to neutralize this effect.
Banana peels
Banana peels are rich in potassium, which is a vital element for plant growth and development. Potassium helps plants retain moisture, which is especially important for seedlings that do not yet have a developed root system. Potassium is involved in the process of photosynthesis, through which plants receive energy from sunlight. This fertilizer also increases resistance to diseases and pests and promotes the formation of large and healthy fruits.
To prepare the fertilizer, you need to crush the peels and cover them with water. The resulting mixture should be infused for several days and then used for watering. For a three-liter jar of water, 3-4 banana peels are enough.
