How to drive snails out of the garden and feed plants naturally: kitchen scraps come to the rescue
Eggshells can be a real godsend for gardeners, as they perform two functions that are very important in this business.
So, next time, before throwing them in the trash, think about whether they could be useful to you. Yana Kuzmich, a gardening enthusiast and blogger from Pennsylvania, shared two ways to use this kitchen waste on her Instagram page.
Organic fertilizer
In her video, Yana demonstrated how to make a homemade natural fertilizer from broken eggshells.
First, place the eggshells in a bowl and run them under cold or hot water. Put the shells in an oven-safe container and then bake them for a few minutes.
Pour the dried eggshells into a hand blender, grinding into fine crumbs. Then pour the fine crumbs into the jar of your choice.
When you are ready to use, sprinkle the eggshell crumbs over the plants and soil.
One of the reasons why eggshells are a good fertilizer is the high calcium content - calcium carbonate - as well as other nutrients. Calcium carbonate is also known as lime.
Pest control
Eggs contain other beneficial nutrients and minerals, such as small amounts of phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, and manganese.
These nutrients can help reduce soil acidity, aid in the rapid growth of plants that may suffer from calcium-deficient soil, and act as a deterrent to pests such as slugs and snails.
That is why this kitchen waste should also be used to fight unwanted guests in your garden too.
