How to disinfect soil for sowing seedlings: two effective ways
Soil preparation and proper sowing of seeds are the key steps to obtaining healthy and strong seedlings. It is important to disinfect the soil beforehand to prevent the development of pathogens that can harm young plants.
You can use different containers for sowing seedlings: plastic containers, peat pots, etc. The main thing is that they have drainage holes for the outflow of excess water. OBOZ.UA tells you how to properly disinfect the soil and why it should be done.
Method 1
Disinfecting the soil with an oven is an effective method of disinfecting the substrate before sowing seedlings. This process helps to destroy pests, pathogens, and fungal spores.
- Any soil intended for growing seedlings is suitable for disinfection. You will need a metal baking sheet.
- The soil should be slightly moist, but not wet.
- Spread the soil in a thin layer (no more than 1-2 cm) on a metal baking sheet and place it in a preheated 180 °C oven for 30 minutes. Do not exceed the recommended temperature to avoid destroying the beneficial microorganisms in the soil.
Stick to the recommended time, as too long a treatment can lead to overdrying of the soil.
Method 2
Steam treatment is a safe and effective way to kill harmful microorganisms. This method is especially useful for preparing soil for sensitive crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and others.
High temperature steam destroys most pests and even weed seeds. Unlike chemical methods, steam treatment does not harm the beneficial microorganisms in the soil.
- Pour water into a pot and put it on the fire.
- Place a colander or sieve with soil over the pot.
- Cover the pot and bring the water to a boil.
- Keep the soil over the steam for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
