How to determine if grapes are ready for harvesting and how to do it right

Grapes are one of the most favorite crops in Ukraine. The process of harvesting it has its own peculiarities, so it requires special attention and knowledge.

To get the best taste and quality of berries, you need to follow some rules. The NV publication described them in detail.

The timing of the harvest is very important. If grapes are harvested too early, they will not taste good enough and will not ripen, and if they are harvested too late, the berries may burst or even wilt.

In Ukraine, most grape varieties ripen between August and November, but on average, you can start harvesting in mid-September. However, each variety requires an individual approach.

Harvesting different varieties

In most cases, grape harvesting begins with white varieties, which are used to make wine. Table grapes can be picked even during the frost period, but in this case, they should be eaten immediately.

Signs of ripeness

The best way to tell if grapes are ripe is to taste them for 2-3 days. If the berries do not become sweeter, then you can harvest them.

You can also understand that the grapes are ripe by the fact that the stalk of the bunches is becoming woody. Also, grapes that are ready for harvest exude a strong and pleasant odor, are easily removed from the bunches, and their seeds are light brown in color and easily separated from the pulp.

White grapes are considered ripe when their skin becomes thin and transparent. In blue grapes, the flesh becomes more saturated and the skin darkens.

If you are still not sure whether it is time to harvest, use an areometer to measure the amount of sugar.

Rules for harvesting

Never pluck the grapes. It is better to cut off the bunches carefully.

Farmers advise picking berries at lunchtime, when there is no dew on the brushes. And if the harvest was caught in the rain, it is better not to touch it for at least three days. Experts also note that you should not put the berries in a bucket but put each bunch in a flat container.

After picking, be sure to check for rotten and still green fruits. They can negatively affect the quality of all products.
