How to cook mashed potatoes correctly to make them tender and airy: we share our secrets
Mashed potatoes are one of the tastiest and simplest potato dishes. To make it tasty, you need to choose the right kind of potatoes for the dish and cook them properly.
The FoodOboz editorial team shares tips from chefs on how to make tender and delicious mashed potatoes.
What kind of potatoes are suitable for mashed potatoes
To make tender mashed potatoes, chefs advise choosing starchy varieties of potatoes. These can be round potatoes with light brown skin and light flesh. It's worth knowing that starchy potatoes boil down strongly during cooking, which ensures a delicate mashed potato consistency.
How to cook mashed potatoes?
Chop the potatoes, put them in hot water, and cook until tender. When the potatoes are done, drain them, put them in a colander, and dry them slightly. To do this, put them back into the hot pot and leave them for a couple of minutes, stirring occasionally. This will evaporate the excess liquid from the potatoes, which is not needed in mashed potatoes.
Next, add butter, cream, milk, sour cream and mash the potatoes.
How not to make mashed potatoes:
Puree should not be overmixed in a blender: this can make it viscous, sticky, and, of course, tasteless.
It is better to make mashed potatoes by hand using a masher with holes. This will not take much effort, because starchy potatoes become very soft after cooking.
To make mashed potatoes from harder varieties, you can use a potato masher. It will help to get rid of lumps. You can add grated garlic or spices to the mashed potatoes for a bright flavor!
