How to clean a moka pot so that your coffee has the perfect flavor
Moka pots use steam pressure to create a concentrated drink that tastes closer to espresso. A strong cup of morning coffee always seems like a good idea, but there's usually not enough time to clean your coffee maker.
After washing it, it often happens that the flavor of coffee seems to change and it becomes not so rich. Experts told us how to properly wash a moka pot so that the coffee has the perfect flavor.
How to wash a moka pot
- Once you have finished brewing, allow the coffee maker to cool down completely. After that, unscrew the individual compartments and rinse each part with hot water.
- Wipe off any stains. This is important because coffee residue can burn during later use, ruining the flavor.
- Dry the container with a microfiber cloth.
Moka pots should not be cleaned with a dishwasher as the detergents are too harsh and can penetrate the surface. This can change the taste of the coffee, giving a noticeable soapy aftertaste.
How to get rid of limescale
If you notice white scale on your coffee maker, you will have to use a stronger remedy to break up the mineral buildup.
You will need vinegar. Acetic acid helps to break down mineral deposits. This happens through a specific chemical reaction. The vinegar, when it comes in contact with the calcium carbonate in the buildup, turns it into a form of salt, which it then easily flushes out.
Simply add 2 teaspoons of vinegar to the water. Close the lid, place the container on the stove and allow the water to boil. Then remove the mixture and rinse the coffee maker with water to remove any residue.
It is not necessary to make coffee immediately after such a strong cleaning. It is better to just throw away the first three servings, and this will eliminate the residual flavor.
Alternative to vinegar
If you don't have vinegar, you can also use citric acid. It will easily remove hard water stains. The steps are the same: fill your coffee maker to the line, add 2 teaspoons of citric acid to the water, place on the stove and brew without coffee. After that, rinse the container with water and make three cups of coffee, which should be poured out so as not to spoil the flavor. Just like vinegar, citric acid reacts with calcium carbonate, turning it into a kind of salt.
