How to activate dill seeds before sowing: a simple tip
Dill is easy to care for, but sometimes it takes longer than expected to germinate. Activation before planting is an important step that helps to create optimal conditions for seed awakening, stimulates the growth and development of a generous harvest.
To speed up the process of germination of dill seeds, they should be properly treated before sowing. OBOZ.UA tells you about the most effective treatment option.
Why you need to activate the seeds
Activation helps to awaken the seeds, especially if they have been stored for a long time. Sprouting will be more uniform, because the procedure reduces the risk that some of the seeds will remain ungerminated in the soil.
Seed treatment helps seeds absorb moisture faster, which activates internal processes related to germination.
Some activation methods (e.g., soaking in disinfectant solutions) help to destroy pathogens of fungi and other diseases that may be on the surface of the seed.
After activation, the seeds become more resistant to unfavorable conditions, such as insufficient humidity or temperature fluctuations, which is especially important for growing in unstable weather conditions.
How to treat dill seeds
Dill seeds are covered with essential oils that protect them from drying out, but slow down the process of water absorption and, consequently, germination. Without treatment, seedlings may appear a little later.
Start by choosing high-quality seeds, because the future harvest depends on their condition. Even under ideal growing conditions, weak or damaged seeds will not produce the desired result.
It is also important to pay attention to the soil composition. If the soil is highly acidic, dill will not be able to develop properly. To avoid this, you should add ash and phosphorus fertilizers, and it is better to leave potash fertilizers for the spring. Nitrogen fertilization, in turn, will help stimulate rapid and intensive plant growth.
Step-by-step instructions
To activate seed germination, use a simple method of preliminary preparation.
- Take a cloth, put seeds in it, and tie it in a bag.
- Dip this bag in hot water and leave it there for three days. Change the water regularly: as soon as it cools down, add a new portion of warm water.
- After this step is complete, put the seeds and the cloth in a plastic bag and keep it in a warm place for another four days. When the first sprouts appear, this will be a signal that the seeds are ready for planting.
