How often should you water your lawn in summer: tips for beginners
A well-groomed lawn will add coziness and comfort to your local area. However, it is not an easy task to create the perfect lawn. Proper aeration, using the optimal height of the mower blade and regular fertilization of the soil primarily affect the speed and quality of grass growth.
Experts told us how often to water the lawn in summer. There are several signs that will indicate the need for increased care.
Signs that the lawn needs watering
The following signs indicate the need for watering:
- Curled up leaf blades. The curling up of grass leaves under the influence of the midday sun is not a good indicator - check the condition of the leaves in the evening.
- The leaves turn blue-gray rather than green.
- Footprints or lawnmower tires remain visible for a long time - the grass does not level out.
None of these signs indicate that the grass is about to die: the lawn can turn brown and go dormant, but remain alive for three to four weeks.
How often should you water your lawn
Daily watering is not the best solution. Water clogs the air spaces between the soil particles that the roots need. When the root system cannot breathe or grow, or the blades of grass are wet for more than 14 hours, they become vulnerable to various diseases and pests.
A healthy lawn needs good soil - it should be well aerated and rich in organic matter. Poor or dry soil may require more frequent watering.
When to water your lawn
The best time to water your lawn is usually between 4am and 8am or during the natural dew period to reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation.
Grass cut to a height of approximately 7 cm holds more water than grass cut to a height of 5 cm. By maintaining the proper height, you can reduce the frequency of watering and the amount of water your lawn needs.
OBOZ.UA also said that it is quite easy to check whether it is time to water. Experienced gardeners conduct the so-called "footprint test". Just walk on the lawn and check if the blades of grass "spring" when you lift your foot.
