His prophecies were called "ruthlessly imaginative," but they came true: how physicist and inventor Archibald Lowe became a household name

A century ago, physicist and inventor Archibald Lowe predicted the existence of "moving stairs" and "personal telephones"

In 1925, the prophecies of the scientist and inventor Professor Archibald Montgomery Lowe were called "ruthlessly imaginative". He said that in the future, people would have radio alarm clocks, communication via a "personal radio station," breakfasts "with loudspeaker news and television reports of events," and "stairs that move."

However, a century later, most of his predictions are no longer fantasy but reality. Researchers from the online genealogy service Findmypast found reports of Lowe's predictions in a large digital archive of historical newspapers available to the public and included them in a collection of predictions for 2025 made by people a century ago on their website.

Born in 1888, Archibald Lowe was an engineer, research physicist, inventor, and writer. A pioneer in many fields, he invented the first unmanned aerial vehicle, worked on the development of television, and was known as the "father of radio guidance systems" for his work on airplanes, torpedo boats, and guided missiles.

In 1925, he predicted such things as "home loudspeakers" (speakers), the "television machine" and access to global broadcasting at the touch of a button. As well as the use of secret cameras and eavesdropping devices. In addition, his predictions included "moving stairs" (modern escalators), "automatic telephones" and the fact that women would wear "men's" clothes.

In recent years, two more of his predictions have been realized: the use of wind for useful purposes and the fact that technology will replace humans in doing hard and unpleasant work. We are talking about offshore wind and solar power and, it seems, even artificial intelligence.

"It's amazing that a hundred years ago, one visionary scientist was able to predict how new technologies that were in their infancy at the time could change the world by 2025. This makes us think about how the progress we see around us today will be perceived by our descendants," commented Jen Baldwin, researcher at Findmypast.
