Hera probe takes spooky photos of Earth on Halloween

The European asteroid probe Hera has taken new images of the Earth. The planet looks eerily shining on them.

This terrifying plurality of Earth's planets appeared as if specifically for Halloween. The images were taken from a distance of about 2 million kilometers from different spectral bands of the HyperScout H instrument of the Hera asteroid mission, which operates in outer space, the European Space Agency writes.

HyperScout H is a hyperspectral thermal imager that observes its subjects in more colors than the human eye can distinguish. These close-up images of the Earth were obtained by separating wavelengths to show how the device works in practice.

"In addition to being beautiful space art, these images allow us to observe cloud cover on our planet from a distance of almost 2,000,000 km and verify the accuracy of our data processing algorithms," says Marcel Popescu, a member of the instrument's development team from the University of Craiova in Romania.
