The lawyers of Russian Alexander Vinokurov, the son-in-law of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, tried to lift sanctions against him, but the Court of Justice of the European Union rejected their appeal. The judgment states that Vinokurov "has close ties to the Russian government and is active in sectors of the economy that are a significant source of income for the government of the Russian Federation, which is responsible for the annexation of Crimea and destabilization of the situation in Ukraine."

The document was published on the court's website on January 29. In official EU documents, Vinokurov is described as "an entrepreneur engaged in activities in sectors of the economy that provide a significant source of income for the government of the Russian Federation."

Alexander Vinokurov, 42, is married to Sergey Lavrov's daughter, Ekaterina. He is the chairman of the Marathon Group and the main shareholder of the "Magnit" chain of Russian stores.

The Russian demanded not only to lift the sanctions but also to pay all costs and expenses related to the case.

The court specified the grounds for economic restrictions against Vinokurov:

– he is an entrepreneur with business interests (in the fields of food retail, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and infrastructure) in the Russian Federation;

– he is married to Ekaterina Vinokurova, the daughter of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the aggressor state Lavrov. The latter "is responsible for the aggression and policies pursued by Russia";

– his father is Semyon Vinokurov, who headed the unitary Russian enterprise "Capital's pharmacies" and is considered one of the leading entrepreneurs in the pharmaceutical industry of the Russian Federation.

Thus, he is closely linked to the Kremlin and is active in sectors of the economy that are a significant source of income for the Kremlin.

The court also drew attention to the fact that on February 24, 2022, after the outbreak of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, Vinokurov, along with 36 other businessmen, met with dictator Vladimir Putin and other government officials.

"The fact that he was invited to participate in this meeting indicates that he is part of Putin's inner circle and that he supports or carries out actions or policies that jeopardize or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine, as well as stability and security in Ukraine," the court said in its ruling.

It is worth noting that Lavrov's family members, like himself, are on the Western sanctions lists.
