Giant teeth and a head resembling a toilet seat. The remains of a swamp monster have been found in Namibia
Scientists have found the remains of a giant swamp monster in Namibia, which lived on the territory of the country about 280 million years ago. The animal, whose body structure resembles a salamander, had giant teeth and a flat head similar to a toilet seat. Researchers believe that because of its special shape, the creature may have been the tallest predator in its ecosystem.
The swamp monster, which scientists have named Gaiasia jennyae, existed on the planet about 40 years earlier, from the appearance of the first dinosaurs, writes Live Science. Most likely, the main habitat of the creature was the bottom of reservoirs.
Researchers discovered fossils of four salamander specimens in northwestern Namibia. "When we found this huge specimen just lying in the open like a giant nodule, it was really shocking. When we saw it, we realized it was something completely new."
Gaiasia jennyae is an early vertebrate creature that has intermediate features between a fish and a full-fledged quadrupedal animal. The swamp monster had gills and two pairs of limbs that were not fully formed for locomotion on land.
According to the remains found, the skull of Gaiasia jennyae was 61 centimeters long. Scientists assume that the total size of the animal could reach 2.5 meters, significantly exceeding the height of humans or other representatives of its species.
Jason Pardo, a researcher at the Field Museum in Chicago, noted that the swamp monster had huge jaws, making it the strongest predator in the ecosystem, "It has a large, flat head that looks like a toilet seat, allowing it to open its mouth wide and suck in its prey. It has huge fangs, and the entire front of the mouth is just giant teeth."
