Gas cut off to all in Transnistria: hundreds of thousands of residents left without fuel due to cessation of transit
In Moldova's Transnistria, gas was cut off to both apartment buildings and boiler houses. Due to the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, Transnistria was left without natural gas supplies.
This is stated in the message of Tiraspoltransgaz-Pridnestrovie on Telegram. "In apartment buildings, gas for cooking will be available only until the pressure in the network drops to a critical level," the company said.
Objects to be disconnected:
- Rooftop boilers (providing heating);
- Private houses in cities, villages and towns (if possible);
- Apartment buildings with autonomous heating.
- Apartment buildings that are connected to the same gas pipeline as private households (if possible to disconnect).
"Turn off the gas taps on your appliances. Do not try to restore the gas supply yourself!" the company said. The reason for the shutdown is that Ukraine has stopped the transit of Russian gas through its territory.
What will be the consequences?
Analysts predict that the cessation of transit through Ukraine will not cause a significant increase in gas prices in Europe. Compared to the price spike in 2022, the market is now much more stable thanks to alternative energy sources.
Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko: "Citizens will not feel this event. Gas and heat will be supplied to the homes of every Ukrainian. All the necessary work has been carried out by the GTS Operator...We are ready for the functioning of our GTS without the transit of Russian gas."
According to Reuters, for Ukraine, the termination of transit means the loss of about $800 million in annual income from transit fees. Russia, on the other hand, will lose approximately $5 billion from gas sales to European consumers. European countries have prepared in advance for the termination of gas supplies through Ukraine:
- Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria and other countries have found alternative supply routes;
- Hungary will continue to receive gas through the Turkish Stream pipeline;
- Since 2022, the European Union has significantly reduced its dependence on Russian gas by increasing energy imports from the United States, Norway, and Qatar.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico threatened to limit electricity supplies from his country to Ukraine and visited the Kremlin to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. In response, Zelensky said that Putin had instructed Fico to open a second energy front against Ukraine at the expense of the interests of the Slovak people.
