Eyebrow extensions: how they work and what are the pros and cons of the procedure
The most natural thick eyebrows have been in fashion for several years now. There's even a new procedure called eyebrow extension, which involves adding individual hairs to achieve thicker, more expressive brows.
However, you shouldn't immediately sign up for it and try out the cosmetic know-how on yourself. Experts told us what this procedure is, how it works, and what are its pros and cons.
Eyebrow extension procedure
The procedure is painless, and if done correctly, the result will look very natural.
"A client who is considering microblading or permanent eyebrow makeup may first resort to extensions to get an idea of what kind of eyebrows look best," said Reilly Shimko, aesthetic medicine specialist.
Yetti Bames, an expert in eyebrow extensions, added that the process is easy, and no one will even notice that you have different brows if there is no wrong color or excessive hair or glue used.
"Eyebrow extensions are small strands of hair that are glued to and within the eyebrow to mimic natural hairs," said Bames.
The hairs are applied with a special transparent glue. Similar to eyelash extensions, they can be mink or synthetic and are glued with a long-lasting medical glue that is safe for use on the skin.
Pros and cons of the procedure
Eyebrow extentions are used to create shape or volume. The individual hairs double in thickness after the eyebrow extensions are glued and trimmed to the desired length.
Bames notes that the benefits of the procedure depend on how well the hairs are placed to create a realistic effect. Eyebrow extensions are also great for those who have uneven eyebrows or suffer from hair loss due to alopecia or excessive plucking.
However, the procedure has some potential drawbacks. Eyebrow extensions are not permanent. The procedure requires time and money as you need to renew your eyebrows every two weeks.
There is also a chance that they can damage your natural eyebrows as over time, the glue can damage or weaken the hairs.
Don't forget about the risk of developing an allergic reaction to the glue - given repeated and frequent use, this is not uncommon.
Other details
On the day of the appointment, it is important to come with a clean face and no makeup. Cosmetics affect the effectiveness of the glue and the duration of the result.
The expert should additionally prepare the face, carefully shape the contours, and cleanse the eyebrows before starting the extension.
"If a client gets their eyebrows shaped - whether with tweezers, waxing, or threading - it should be done two to three days before the extension to ensure that there is no skin irritation," Shimko said.
Proper care is essential to keep your eyebrow extensions looking like new and lasting longer. Do not use products that contain oils and serums, as they can cause premature breakdown of the glue.
The first 48 hours after the procedure is a critical period for proper care. Clients are advised to be careful with washing their face for two days, as wetting the eyebrows during this period also increases the likelihood of artificial hair loss.
