New sanctions to be adopted against Russia

The EU has reached a political agreement on the 12th package of sanctions against Russia. It may be officially adopted in the coming days. The next sanctions may be adopted in a few months.

Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Jozwiak wrote about this on his page on X (formerly Twitter). According to him, another package may be adopted on the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion, in February 2024. However, this may be the last package of sanctions for a long period.

Earlier, Reuters reported that EU countries are seeking to make it harder to circumvent existing sanctions, including the G7 oil price cap. The text of the package is said to include tougher measures to ensure that Russian oil is trading below the ceiling as compliance has weakened in recent months.

Initially, the European Commission wanted to ban the sale of used tankers to Russian entities or for use in Russia, as well as to entities that could use the tankers to circumvent the G7 oil price cap, but this point was dropped. One source said that Mediterranean countries with strong shipping companies are concerned that these measures could put them at a competitive disadvantage.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, together with the European Commission, proposed to:

  • impose sanctions on more than 120 individuals and entities for their role in undermining Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity;
  • adopt new import and export bans;
  • strengthen the oil price ceiling and counteract the circumvention of EU sanctions.

Japan has already banned diamonds from Russia

Japan has imposed a new package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a ban on imports of rough diamonds from January 1, 2024. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Economy of Japan.

Japan is imposing export restrictions on 57 Russian and 27 Belarusian companies, as well as a number of legal entities from the UAE, Armenia, Syria and Uzbekistan for helping Russia evade previously imposed sanctions by Japan and its allies.

Japan imposes sanctions, including asset freezes, against 35 individuals and 43 organizations from the Russian Federation that are directly involved in the invasion of Ukraine or destabilization of eastern Ukraine.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, earlier, the United States and Canada also expanded sanctions against Russia. Businessmen and about 200 companies were added to the blacklist. Among others, investor Ivan Tavrin and businessman Vladislav Sviblov were subjected to American restrictions.
