Weapons from the Iron Age were found during a highway expansion in Denmark. The archaeologists unearthed an extremely well-preserved sacrificial weaponry consisting of more than a hundred spears, lances and swords, as well as a very rare chainmail shirt.
1500-2000 years ago, a chieftain buried enough weapons for a small army in two structures located northwest of Hedensted, between Vejle and Horsens. The unexpected discovery fascinated archaeologists, revealing the secrets of the hidden world of the Iron Age. According to the Daily Express US, scientists are confident that all the items found will be enough to equip a small army.
119 spears and javelins, eight swords, five knives, three arrowheads, one axe, a harness, fragments of a bugle, and fragments of at least two jury rings were found. Several bronze and iron objects have yet to be identified. Along with the numerous weapons, an incredibly valuable chainmail shirt and other items were buried, indicating that the site was home to a powerful leader. The way in which the military equipment was buried indicates that it was a sacrifice to a higher power, according to the website of the Weile Culture Museum.
"We knew from the very first research that it would be extraordinary, but the excavation has exceeded all our expectations," shared his impressions Elias Witte Thomasen, an archaeologist and excavation leader from the Vejle Museums.
He said that most of the weapons are impressive, but he was most excited by the fact that this find gives an opportunity to see the social structure and everyday life of the Iron Age.
"We suddenly feel very close to the people who lived here 1500 years ago," the scientist said.
He also added that the ongoing excavations and further analysis of the materials will show whether this equipment belonged to local soldiers or was the military booty of a defeated enemy.
