Eerie footage as if straight from a horror movie was captured in Brazil. Hundreds of spiders were seen hovering in the sky in São Thomé das Letras, state of Minas Gerais.
Expert and biologist Kayron Passos reassured that this is not an apocalypse. In fact, it is a natural phenomenon called a spider orgy, The Sun reports.

A rain of countless arachnids hovering in the air scared the locals. "It was in my brother's backyard in Tiradentes. Always in the late afternoon. I was scared when I first saw it," said one eyewitness.
Kayron emphasized that there was nothing to be afraid of. "It's a spider orgy, the females have something called spermatheca, where they store the semen of different males to fertilise the eggs. This way, the female ensures that she will have several different offspring and increase genetic variability," the scientist explained.
He also added that even after fertilization of eggs, female spiders continue to collect sperm for further use. "This behaviour increases resistance, making these offspring more resistant to diseases," Passos said.

The researchers concluded that the spiders were having a mating orgy, performing a ritual and sticking together on a very large web.
"Spiders generally do not stay together, but some species exhibit this social behaviour of forming colonies. The strategy of staying together in a group increases the food supply for the offspring and juveniles," said Ana Lucia Tourinho, a PhD arachnologist working at the National Institute of Amazonian Research.
Similar cases of “spider rain" have already been recorded in Brazil.

Residents of the same state of Minas Gerais have already reported seeing the terrifying phenomenon - spider rain - in 2019. And in 2013, a similar incident was recorded in southern Brazil, where spiders staged an orgy around utility poles.
