What not to plant near strawberries

Radish

Radishes have a very short growing season, usually only 3-4 weeks. This means that it quickly takes up space in the garden and can create shade for strawberries. Radishes are vulnerable to some fungal diseases and pests that can easily spread to neighboring plants, including strawberries.

Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers

These plants belong to the Solanaceae family, which is prone to common diseases with strawberries, such as late blight. In addition, they are also strong competitors for nutrients.

Cabbage

Cabbage, broccoli, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and other members of the cabbage family are plants that should not be planted near strawberries. Cabbages can release substances that inhibit the growth of strawberries and are often a source of pests that can damage strawberry leaves.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are susceptible to diseases such as powdery mildew and anthracnose, which can spread to strawberries.

Garlic and onions

Although these plants have bactericidal properties, they can inhibit strawberry growth.

Raspberries and blackberries

Strawberries and raspberries have similar soil and care requirements, so they will compete for nutrients and water. In addition, raspberries will begin to shade strawberries, which will negatively affect their yield.

Similar to raspberries, blackberries are a strong competitor for strawberries. It can also shade them and deplete the soil.

Beans

Beans are another plant that can be successfully planted next to strawberries, and there are several reasons why this neighborhood is beneficial for both crops. Beans improve soil composition by fixing nitrogen, do not compete for space, and help maintain soil moisture. In addition, they contribute to the natural biological balance and can even help control some pests.

Beans can serve as a natural defense against erosion and also help to retain moisture in the soil due to their leaves and structure. This is especially important for strawberries, which need even moisture for good berry development.

Spinach

Spinach is an ideal neighbor for strawberries due to its minimal competition for resources, ability to retain moisture and maintain soil health. In addition, the fast growth cycle of spinach allows for efficient use of space and increases the diversity in the garden.

Peas

Peas help to improve soil structure and enrich it with nitrogen. In addition, peas can protect strawberries from some pests, making their joint cultivation beneficial for gardeners. This combination contributes not only to the better development of each plant but also to higher yields.
