The resort island of Bali in Indonesia has become a center of tourism on par with the Maldives. More than 10 million people visit it every year, which greatly harms the local ecosystems and disturbs the indigenous inhabitants. That is why the country's government has decided to limit the construction of new hotels, nightclubs and villas.

According to high-ranking officials, this should reduce the influx of tourists, because the number of places for overnight stays will be limited and not everyone will be able to seamlessly get to the island whenever they want. As CNN notes, for now, Indonesia is imposing a moratorium on real estate construction for business.

May 2023, Bali Governor Wayan Koster reported that the island plans to limit mass tourism, as travelers hardly bring significant revenue to the country's budget.

"So we will be implementing a policy to say no to mass tourism, we will limit it by introducing a quota system. A quota system for the next 100 years. If we let it last for a long time, it will be cheap tourists, most of whom eat packaged rice, ride motorcycles, violate again and finally hack ATMs," he said.

With the moratorium, the government will now try to improve the quality of life of the indigenous people, create new jobs for them and stop them assimilating with some 200,000 foreigners, most of them Russians.

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Panjaitan said the innovation could take up to 10 years if it comes into effect.

The source said the number of travelers to Bali has surged after the island allowed tourists to vacation there following the coronavirus pandemic.
