During excavations in the ancient city of Pisidia Antioch in western Turkey, an interesting artifact was discovered: a "magic amulet for cancer." According to the researchers, it was a gift from a father to his sick daughter.

The head of the excavations, Professor Mehmet Ozhanli, said that the find, dating back to the fourth century AD, was discovered during excavations around the church on Edilik Hill. However, the amulet appeared earlier than the church on this site, and most likely got here in the 10th century AD, Arkeonews reports.

After examining the amulet, the researchers noticed that one side depicts a crab and the other side has the name of the sick girl and her parents. Apparently, the father ordered this amulet for his daughter as a healing pendant.

The figure of a crab has a hidden meaning, as in ancient times tumors were compared to cancer or a crab, The Jerusalem Post notes. The term "cancer" actually comes from the Greek word "karkinos," which means crab.

Dr. Galen, who is known for his cancer research, said that the black veins that surround cancerous tumors look like the legs of a crab. "Just as a crab's legs spread out around its body, the veins in this disease have a similar shape. They spread from an abnormal crab-shaped tumor," he said.

According to the scientists, the found artifact with the image of a crab and inscriptions with wishes for healing belongs to the Hellenistic period. It was at this time that the use of these types of talismanic stones was widespread. However, the latest specimen is one of the best preserved.

Scientists emphasize that the significance of this amulet has been preserved over time because of its value as a gemstone. Over the years, it has been used by various people because of the belief that it can cure cancer.
