Amazon CEO Bezos dreams of sending a trillion people to live in space balloons, saying Earth is too crowded

Bezos wants to send people into space

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and CEO of the Blue Origin space project, has admitted that the Earth is too small a planet for humanity to successfully survive on. He proposes to build space balloons that can accommodate a trillion people.

The billionaire admitted this during an interview with Lex Fridman. He backed up his dreams with statistics that allegedly prove that humanity will be more successful in this way.

A similar idea about people living in space was first described by science fiction writer Gerard K. O'Neill, but Bezos believes that such an astronomical number of people (less than 8 billion live on Earth now) will allow humanity to thrive.

"If we had a trillion people, we would have 1,000 Mozarts and 1,000 Einsteins at any given time," Bezos said, speaking about his dream.

According to him, it is simply not possible to achieve such a statistical number of geniuses on Earth as the planet is "too small," so the only way out is "giant space stations."

However, according to the media, Bezos is somewhat manipulating statistics as in addition to 1,000 Einsteins, humanity will also have another (not so beautiful) statistical indicator: serial killers.

According to the most recent statistics collected in 2018, there were 12 active serial killers in the United States, which is 1 killer per 27 million people. If we use these statistics, then there will be a thousand geniuses but also 37,000 active serial killers per trillion people. That is 37 murderers for every 1 genius. The prospect, frankly, is not good.

But there is a more disturbing possibility: "The Einstein of serial killers". However, the probability is not very high.

Coming back to humanity, it is worth noting the difference between what Bezos wants and the dreams of interplanetary humanity of SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who is certainly Bezos's main competitor in the field of space future.

Bezos sees the Earth of the future as a kind of oasis for humanity, a vacation spot that can be visited by simply boarding a shuttle.

He also claims that each individual will have a choice: to live among the stars or to return to Earth.
