AI can shrink our brains: biologist makes a disappointing prediction for humanity

Artificial intelligence will change our lives – often for the better, often for the worse

Evolution can change or even destroy some of the human traits we value most, even affecting what it means to be human. And artificial intelligence will play a significant role in this.

The biologist Robert Brooks spoke about how human evolution can be changed by interaction with the world of rich diversity of AI in an article published in The Quarterly Review of Biology. In it, he also considered how artificial intelligence can affect the human brain: it will evolve to become even smaller and have less autonomous memory.

Computers are computing machines that benefit their users – people. And this will only increase with the development of AI. There is already evidence that cultural knowledge sharing and writing have reduced the burden on people who had to memorize everything. As a result, the human brain has shrunk over the past millennia.

With the development of AI, searchable knowledge on the Internet and social media posts that "remember" who did what to whom will take over most of our memory burden. Because of this, the human brain will evolve and become even smaller, with less autonomous memory.

However, there is no need to panic – because there are benefits. For example, a smaller brain includes safer childbirth for both mother and newborn. And with computers and artificial intelligence storing ever-increasing amounts of data and knowledge, humanity will still be able to do wonderful things driven by intelligence. But only as long as it has access to artificial intelligence. Because humanity is losing the ability to do things on its own as AI develops and interacts with it.

The evolutionary changes that have occurred over many generations may well alter or even diminish some of the human traits we value most, including friendship, intimacy, communication, trust, and intelligence, as these are the traits that AI is most attracted to. In a non-trivial way, this could change what it means to be human.
